How to Start a Podcast - Part 3 (Setting expectations on downloads, etc)

On this week's podcast we’re gonna talk all about expectations when it comes to downloads and how you can build your audience full of die hard listeners!! Y’all ready? LETS GO!

Welcome! My name is Gary Cantrell, and if you’re new here I’m a 14 year podcaster, I’ve worked in live internet radio broadcasting and I love to create videos! This is part 3  and the final installment of my How To Start a podcast series and we’re gonna talk about building an audience and setting expectations before you even start.

Show of hands…how many of you want to scale your podcast to thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands and even millions of listeners? Of course that’s what we all want right? But hold on one sec. This is not something that is going to magically happen overnight. It takes a lot of time to scale a podcast from zero on up and I completely understand there are certain cases where podcasts have done just that. They blow up over night and gain a huge following from the start. You have to go in with the mindset of you are absolutely going to put in the work and reach that level someday but it’s not going to just happen quickly. If you’ve heard any of my previous podcasts including the Fake Famous one you know how I feel about people trying to build huge followings online too quickly because they don’t want it to take as long as it takes. We live in an instant gratification world where amazon can in many cases have a package to me the same day so damn it why can’t I blow up big online instantly?

For you to keep your head in the right mindset to scale your podcast up you have to know the value and power of patience. You continue to show up, get your reps in and in time people will come. That’s how this works for the everyday person like you and me. If you can be consistent and you’ve got the right personality that clicks with people you are going to gain die hard listeners who can’t imagine not having you speaking to them on a weekly basis. But how do we find these people? It comes down to community building and no i’m not talking about joining random facebook groups and spamming your podcast links. NO ONE likes that and you’re likely to be ignored and blocked. The proper way to go about this is, joining these communities and offering value. That’s why we’re really podcasting anyway right? TO ADD VALUE. So you show up and you offer value to whatever niche you're in. People will notice this. They might click on your page and see that you do a podcast and they might even go and check it out. That’s one way to go about it.

You can also drop your link when it’s absolutely relevant. For instance, I could be in some group and someone does a post about how they want to start a podcast. I could give some great advice, brief but great advice. The person sees that reply and really appreciates it and see that I have something to say on the matter. They’ll likely say thank you and then you hit them with a reply, if you want to hear me speak more in depth on this, I’ve done a podcast about it and here’s the link. Someone has a problem, you have a solution. That’s how this is done. You win them over with your great insight and engaging personality and they go and check out your podcast. Boom you’ve got them. That’s what so much of this comes down to is giving value first. Making an impact on someone's life, hopefully blowing their mind by solving a problem or showing them something they didn’t know and now they feel like a weight is off their shoulders.

My point is: Getting a following or getting famous and getting paid from your podcast is a RESULT of your hard work and dedication to showing up for people on the podcast when they need you. Or in my case back when I was doing nothing but interviews on this podcast is giving a platform for people to share their stories in hopes that others hear it and it helps them if they’re going through similar situations. Getting famous and rich shouldn’t be the goal, it should be the result of your hard work. That’s it.

Now that you’ve been listening to me these last 3 weeks talking about how to start a podcast, show of hands how many of you are actually going to do it? How many of you are going to show up week after week and deliver? I hope you do. I want you to do me a favor. If you’ve made it to the end of this series and it’s had an impact on you and you’re going to start a podcast send me a DM on Instagram or Twitter and tell me all about it. I would LOVE to hear from you and see what you’ve got going on. I’m rooting for you and if you have any questions feel free to hit me up as well. I’m also going to open myself up to consulting and no I’m not one of those annoying consultants who’s just trying to bait you into working with me. I’m a firm believer that most of the stuff you need for your podcast is either in this series or out there on the internet. I’m not selling secret information but if you like my delivery and want someone to bounce things off of I’m available for paid consulting and I’ll be happy to hear your ideas and offer my take on it. Hit me up if that sounds like something you want or need.
